Save The Bay recruiting volunteers for 42nd annual Save The Bay Swim at Newport and Jamestown locations
Save The Bay is gearing up for its 42nd annual Save The Bay Swim and is recruiting volunteers to support the event at the Newport Naval Base and at Potter Cove (Jamestown) on Saturday, August 4, 2018.
Available volunteer assignments at the Newport Naval Base ??? the Swim???s starting point ????? include:
- Directing parking in the Newport Grand parking lot (3:30-7:45 a.m.)
- Unloading kayaks at the Newport Naval Base (3:45-7:45 a.m.)
- Inspecting kayaks at the Newport Naval Base (3:45-7:45 a.m.)
Those who choose to volunteer at Potter Cove in Jamestown ??? the Swim???s finish point ??? will have a variety of tasks to choose from, including:
- Directing parking in Jamestown and guiding visitors to shuttles (4:45-9:45 a.m.)
- Monitoring and guarding the finish line, encouraging swimmers and keeping watch for any who need assistance (5-10 a.m.)
- Supporting the post-Swim party by setting up, preparing food and managing trash and recycling (5:30-10:30 a.m.)
Experienced kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders are also needed to join the event???s Safety Team to monitor for any participant who needs assistance (6-10 a.m.). Safety team members must attend an orientation.

As one of the most storied open-water swims in the United States, the Save The Bay Swim celebrates tremendous progress in cleaning up Narragansett Bay since its first official Swim in 1977 and the organization???s founding in 1970. In the early years of the Swim, swimmers often emerged from the water with oil and tar balls on their skin and swimsuits. Conversely, in recent years, swimmers reported seeing schools of menhaden beneath them. The Swim is Save The Bay???s largest annual fundraiser, providing critical support to the organization???s efforts to protect and improve Narragansett Bay and its watershed, and the event???s success relies on the support of more than 150 volunteers.
