During the first week of August, five members of BSA Venturing Crew 007 chartered by the Central Congregational Church of Attleboro Falls, went backpacking in Cimarron, New Mexico. Ashley Peterson, Mitchell Kennedy Smith, Kelcie Kennedy-Smith, David Chutjian, and Nick Olivero, backpacked through Philmont Scout Reservations, 215 square miles of untamed wilderness in Cimarron, New Mexico. During their 50 mile backpacking trek, they were accompanied by two provided rangers, and three other youth from Midwestern states. They slept out under the stars, took a midnight tour of an abandoned mine. Panning for gold, tomahawk throwing, and breathtaking views every step of the way were only a few things these young men and women encountered over the course of the six day backpacking trek which peaked at 12,000 ft in elevation. The youth backpacked through canyons, over mountains, across rivers, through meadows and forest while learning about their limits both emotionally and physically. Overall every single scout found the experience to be life altering. The Venturing crew is already looking forward to their 2009 trek.
