Where the making of America began

An important facet of American history often forgotten is our industrial legacy, begun over two centuries ago, in Pawtucket, RI, where Samuel Slater built his now famed historic site manufacturing textiles that ushered in our Industrial Revolution.

Sunday afternoon, October 4, from 12 noon-5 pm, in honor of National Spinning & Weaving Week, Slater Mill, 67 Roosevelt, Avenue, in Downtown Pawtucket, presents a FREE Spin Weave Knit Quilt at their Community Guild Studios.

This is a great opportunity for everyone to see, learn and share a variety of traditions and techniques with fiber artists. See handworks and live demonstrations in textile spinning, weaving, knitting, dyeing, quilting, felting and basket making.

For details on this event call Slater Mill at 401-725-8638 or go online at www.slatermill.org

German cultural connections

The colorful autumn season also brings with it the traditions of Germany, most notably Octoberfest celebrations, which began in that country in 1810, honoring the marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to Saxon Princess Therese.

Through the years, this celebration has evolved as festive gatherings featuring extravagant food, drink, dancing and costume.

Friday-Sunday, October 2-4, participate in a local German October Fest at Sal’s German Club, 78 Carter Avenue, Pawtucket, RI. Enjoy a variety of German beers, foods and live ethnic entertainment.

Octoberfest runs October 2nd 6-11 pm, October 3rd 12 noon-11 pm, and October 4th 12 nnon-6 pm.
