(September 30, 2009) – Since 1973, Sea Research Foundation’s Mystic Aquarium has responded to more than 800 calls from the public regarding marine mammal strandings, treating more than 300 marine mammals and releasing more than 160 that would have died had they been left on the shore.
As a founding member of the Northeast Region Stranding Network, their activities are directed primarily along the coasts of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Fishers Island (New York). First responders within their Marine Mammal & Sea Turtle Stranding Program are an important part of their stranding team, responding to animal calls to determine whether an animal is in distress.
Please join Mystic Aquarium staff at the Audubon Environmental Education Center in Bristol, Rhode Island, for a free lecture about their first responder program. Learn how to identify local marine mammal and sea turtle species, and gain knowledge about federal regulations that ensure the safety of these animals. Information will be provided after the lecture for those interested in becoming a first responder.
This program is free but registration is required, please call Audubon at (401) 949-5454 to register. Individuals must be 18 years or older to become a first responder.
