LOCAL CHURCHES TO RING BELLS FOR CLIMATE ACTION DAY

October 14th, 2009 · No Comments

As the evidence for climate change mounts, many religious denominations have adopted Earth stewardship as an integral part of their missions, out of a conviction that communities of faith have a special responsibility to care for the Earth.

On October 24, eight (8) local congregations will be ringing their bells to signal the importance of reducing carbon in Earth’s atmosphere from the current 387 parts per million to 350 parts per million, which scientists tell us is the safe level for avoiding disastrous climate change.

Congregations participating in the bell ringing include:

  • Second Congregational Church of Attleboro
  • Murray Unitarian Universalist Church, Attleboro
  • St. John the Evangelist Church, Attleboro
  • First Baptist Church of Attleboro
  • National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette
  • Central Congregational Church in Attleboro Falls
  • Plainville United Methodist Church
  • North Attleboro First United Methodist Church

The bell-ringing gesture is part of the Attleboro area’s Climate Action Day.  Other events on Saturday Oct 24th include an Earth-Friendly Fair and Climate Action Rally at Balfour Riverwalk Park in downtown Attleboro beginning at 1:00 pm.

At 3:50 pm the rally will end in a group photograph with the assembled crowd standing in a formation that “spells” the number 350.
