The final week of the North Attleboro Recreation Basketball season was held on Saturday, February 6, 2009. The Celtics and The Nets started off the day with an exciting 24-23 contest with the Nets coming home with the victory. As was the case all season, these two teams relied on great defense and used that defensive pressure to score fast break baskets. Anthony Raneri lead the way for The Nets scoring 8 points, grabbing 2 rebounds, and doling out 2 assists. Zack Silvestri (2 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist) and Hayden Miller (4 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist) played a pivotal role for The Nets in preserving the win. It was Shane Barlow’s (6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) strong second half effort that kept The Celtics within striking distance. Jared Espinosa, Nick White and Pat Munley continued their solid play pulling down a total of 21 rebounds and harassing The Nets on defense all game.
In the second game of the day, The Bulls scored a 36-17 victory over The Wizards. Brad Fontaine’s 9 point, 8 rebound and 1 assist totals may have overshadowed the team effort put in by The Bulls as all 9 members of the team found their way into the score book. Ryan Trisoline, Ian Flanagan and Pat Hogan combined for 21 points, 19 rebounds, and 6 assists to help power The Bulls to victory. Evan Sevieri (11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists) and Andrew Duell paced the short-handed Wizards. Jake Cote, Brandon Poillucci and Ross Lewicki also played very well for The Magic.
The final game of the 2009-2010 season featured The Pistons vs The Heat. Deegan Lee (17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assist) and teammate William Reissfelder (16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists) sparked The Pistons offense, resulting in a 57-34 victory. Mitchell Hanwell (8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists) along with Dillon Brown’s 7 rebounds held The Heat in check on the defensive end of the floor. Brandon Hardy of The Heat played a solid game with 8 points, 4 rebound 2 assists while teammates Victor Bader and Thomas Molsey and Kevin Regan added a combined 13 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists in the game. Garrett Antonitis and Bryan Cloherty continued to display their steady improvement, particularly on the defensive end leading The Heat defensive effort with both teamwork and hustle.
As the 2009-2010 North Attleboro Recreation Basketball season has come to a close, we are able to reflect on a successful season. Often times, focus is placed on statistics of individual players and team scores. This is both rewarding and exciting for these boys and their families. However, this season afforded these young players much more. Throughout the season, valuable lessons were both taught and learned. On a weekly basis teams practiced, coaches taught, players learned, and parents sacrificed time to attend their child’s games. The players learned to develop their basketball skills in a forum geared for equal participation and fun, regardless of their skill level. This approach helped to nurture enthusiasm and interest in the sport of basketball, as well as all the athletic aspects the game of basketball provides.
Without the following people the 2009-2010 North Attleboro Recreation Basketball season would not have been possible. We wish to extend our deepest appreciation to the coaches (Tyler Falcone, Shane Barlow, Kevin Munley, Steve Robinson, George Antonitis, Joe Russo, Greg Kayata, Mike Kelleher, Grant Forbes, Mike McNamara, Tony Rinaldi, Steve Breton, and Steve Mankevech), league referees (Ryan Perron, Justin Perron, Tyler Matte, Eddie Fitzpatrick, Brett Mastropoll), and finally, the always supportive recreation director Steven Carvalho and his staff. We look forward to another N.A. Recreation Basketball season next winter.
