President McGovern???s Leadership Generates Decade of Growth

Boston, Ma. – Fisher College announces the retirement of its esteemed president, Dr. Thomas McGovern.

President McGovern will retire at the close of the academic year, June 30, 2017. President McGovern has led Fisher College, located in the heart of Boston???s historic Back Bay, for the past decade after being appointed as the eighth president of the institution in 2007.

Under President McGovern???s leadership, Fisher College has experienced unprecedented success and has evolved into one of the fastest-growing institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. ???I am proud of our college???s accomplishments and the progress we have achieved,??? President McGovern said.

???I would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of our faculty, alumni, staff and especially our students. They have made Fisher College what we are today. I also wish to thank my wife Elaine for her incredible support of the college and the entire Fisher community over these memorable years.??? A distinguished innovator and visionary, President McGovern???s achievements have included an increase in enrollment and retention, facility expansion, and the growth of degree offerings. With his strong background in strategic planning, President McGovern is responsible for directing a college-wide strategic management team that boasted the largest enrollment in the school???s history, as well as the addition of 9 baccalaureate degrees, a Master in Business Administration, and continues to move Fisher College toward additional graduate and undergraduate degrees.

President McGovern, a proud veteran of the United States Army, has also transformed Fisher College into a leading center of higher education for military veterans allowing them to transition successfully from military service to the professional workforce. President McGovern has worked tirelessly to strengthen the relationship between the college and the community it serves.

Under his stewardship, the institution established the College 101 program which gives Boston area public high school students the opportunity to earn up to nine credits while still in high school. ???This program demonstrates a commitment by President McGovern and Fisher College to the community and to the value of encouraging higher education,??? said Dr. Janet Kuser, Fisher College Vice President of Academic Affairs.

???As a member of Fisher College???s Executive Council, I have seen how President McGovern has shaped the college in many positive ways,??? said Dr. Melinda Cook, Fisher College Vice President and Chief of Staff. ???We are growing from a teaching college to a research focused institution where our students and faculty are becoming thought leaders in several emerging fields.

Through President McGovern???s guidance and leadership, Fisher College is poised to continue make great strides in the near and distant future.??????????? ?? As the former Governor???s Representative for Highway Safety and Executive Director of the Massachusetts Governor???s Highway Safety Bureau, President McGovern launched the Fisher College Transportation Safety Initiative.

This initiative supports all standards and addresses problem areas as identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, educating students and the community on the dangers of distracted driving and safe driving habits. President McGovern created the Center for Leadership and Public Service in 2007, a division of Fisher College that encourages and inspires students to pursue careers in public safety and criminal justice through real-life research projects and work experience.

He currently serves as an officer on the Board of Directors for the Boston Police Foundation as well as serving on the Board of the Association of Independent College and Universities of Massachusetts (AICUM). President McGovern is a member of the Fisher College Athletics Hall of Fame and an advocate of the College???s athletics program. He is also a staunch advocate for Fisher College alumni, encouraging engagement with their alma mater. A resident of Belmont, MA, President McGovern holds a bachelor of science from Northeastern University???s School of Management, a Master of Public Administration from Suffolk University???s Sawyer School of Management, and a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Johnson and Wales University.
