UNITED REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

2017 Teacher of the Year

MRS. SUSAN KILEY

The United Regional Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce our 2017 Teacher of the Year. Since 1992, the Chamber has sponsored an annual search for the ???Teacher of the Year??? in an effort to recognize and support the efforts of the education system within our communities.

Local teachers are nominated by their peers, students and the parents of some of those students because they have been a positive influence in the lives of many of our young people as well as the other educators that they work side by side with on a daily basis.??

The nominees must submit a very detailed ???resume??? so to speak, a professional biography outlining their accomplishments, teaching philosophies and their views of the teaching profession and what it means to them.

The successful candidate, in addition to receiving the honor that this recognition brings, receives a beautiful crystal apple award from the United Regional Chamber of Commerce as well as a check for $1,000 sponsored by Bristol County Savings Bank.?? The recipient is also nominated by the Chamber as a local candidate for the ???Massachusetts Teacher of the Year.????? The candidate acts as a spokesperson throughout the community identifying his or her teaching philosophy and ideals.

This year???s Teacher of the Year is Mrs. Susan Kiley, the Technology Integration Coordinator at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, Ma. In this role, she facilitates professional development for faculty and staff which includes integrated lesson planning and emerging technologies, as well as professional learning communities to bring a collaborative approach to innovation in her school. This individual also teaches computer science courses and facilitates a student help desk for her school. Most recently, she designed a model for ongoing professional development tying teacher professional practice goals with micro-credentials in a collaborative setting. Her philosophy of teaching follows a mentoring approach where students are provided the opportunities for experimental learning that is relevant to real world experiences. Most prominent in her teaching is the use of everyday technology by her students to support others and promote a positive digital footprint.

Today???s world is one of constant and rapid change, creating the need for flexibility in both our personal and professional lives. The importance of education in today???s society cannot be stressed enough. Teachers play a key role in molding children into responsible, literate and active citizens.

To quote our Teacher of the Year:

???Being an educator is an awesome responsibility and one in which we, as teachers, can change the world???one student at a time. Through our efforts, we can work together to make sure our students develop the skills necessary to be happy, productive members of society.???
