On Monday, May 21, 2018 at 7pm, James P. McGuire, Commander of the Rhode Island Department, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, offers a retrospective on the Department of Rhode Island Grand Army of the Republic at the Weaver Library. ??
He will discuss the GAR???s role in the lives of veterans of the Civil War and the lives of widows and children of fallen comrades, and how the action of the organization, and sometimes its inaction, can still be felt today.??
Join him in honor of Memorial Day and learn about the organization that helped make Memorial Day a national holiday.
James McGuire is a documentary filmmaker, storyteller and teacher?? who is descended from Civil War veterans on both sides of the conflict.
He is currently serving his third consecutive term as Department Commander of the Rhode Island Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
