Meghan O???Brien has accepted the position as the new Program Director for Frosty Drew Nature Weeks. Since 1983, Nature Weeks has been the signature summer program of the Frosty Drew Nature Center in Charlestown, RI.?? O???Brien brings seven years of experience in environmental education, including summer day camp teacher at the National Zoo in Washington, DC, and Zoo Atlanta in Georgia. A native of the Midwest, she has held naturalist and summer educator positions at schools, urban ecology centers, and outdoor education centers throughout the country.

An inveterate traveler, O???Brien enjoys exploration and sharing her passion for learning with others. O???Brien holds a Bachelors of Science in Biology and has worked with children of all ages. Tyler Amaral, a recent graduate of the University of Rhode Island who has worked for three years at W. Alton Jones will be the Program Assistant for Nature Weeks.

The program???s small class size and the staff-to-child ratio of 1:6 encourage children to develop their curiosity through observation and exploration. Nature Weeks staff help children ages 6-10 explore the environment of Ninigret Park and Ninigret Wildlife Refuge, which includes freshwater and salt ponds – perfect for discovery.

An alternative to summer day camp, Nature Weeks begins June 25 and runs through August 24, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with the option of extended care. There is a different nature-based theme each day in this hands-on program, and can include insects, birds, plants, sea life, reptiles, and environmental issues. Children have fun outdoors, in and out of the water, and experience times for active adventure and quiet reflection. Children create journals that later become treasured souvenirs of summer memories.

Limited financial aid is available through the Erin Eckhart Memorial Scholarship Fund. Donations to the scholarship fund are much appreciated and can be made by mailing a check payable to Frosty Drew Memorial Fund, Inc., and sent to Frosty Drew Nature Center, PO Box 160, Charlestown, RI 02813.
