PROVIDENCE: “EAT – PLAY – LEARN”

National Summer Learning Day

Mayor Jorge Elorza officially proclaimed?? “Summer Learning Day” highlighting the importance of keeping kids learning, safe and healthy every summer. Providence is committed to summer learning to help close the achievement gap, which research shows negatively impacts students and low-income youth in particular. Due to investments made in summer learning opportunities, over 1,000 Providence students are learning and having fun this summer at no cost to their families!

Our celebration kicked off with a visit to the BELL scholars at Young Woods Elementary who are literally ???Bugging Out for Summer Learning!??? The second stop on our tour was Nathan Bishop Middle School where we’ve doubled the amount of students participating in Generation Teach’s award-winning STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Academy. More than 350 middle school students are exploring engineering, social justice, youth activism, and electives of their choice during the school break. Eat, Play, Learn PVD

Healthy activities, mixed with summer educational and employment opportunities, help to keep Providence youth busy around the clock all summer long. That’s why the City launched EAT, PLAY, LEARN, a one-stop-shop to provide youth access to engaging summer programming and healthy, nutritional summer meals.

By ensuring that these activities are free or low-cost like our free meals and $5 weekly day camps, the City is providing every child with the tools they deserve to grow all year round!

Earlier this year, Eat, Play, Learn was awarded a $25,000 grant from the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) during the organization’s 86th Winter Meeting in Washington D.C. last year.

The grant will help the City to provide even more youth with access to camps, meals and learning opportunities!
