Rhode Islanders and visitors to the Ocean State love to play in historic places, from coastal resorts and country clubs to professional sports venues and municipal parks. By balancing historic preservation with the demands of the 21st century, these sites continue to play an active role in our lives.

T he conference is organized by the  R.I. Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission in collaboration with the City of East Providence , East Providence Historical Society , and many partners.

Our keynote speaker is Brent Leggs , Executive Director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. His talk on “Preserving the Power of Place: A Stewardship Vision for Sites of Sports History and Activism” will highlight historic places like Joe Frazier’s Gym in Philadelphia and Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey, where restoration is underway at the former home of the NY Black Yankees and NY Cubans baseball teams.

Conference sessions will discuss historic sport venues, amusements, Civil Rights, roadside architecture, recreational landscapes, playful programming, and more.

East Providence is our home turf. We will tour sports and recreation sites, like the Indoor Tennis Court, Agawam Hunt, Pierce Field, Hunt’s Mills , and the Crescent Park Carousel. We will sample some of the city’s historic neighborhoods, including Phillipsdale, Riverside, Rumford, and the Center (that’s what Townies call the area around City Hall).

Register online by March 22.

Registration fee: $50 | free for college student volunteers

Professional education credits are available for architects and planners. We are in the process of applying for LACES, landscape architects.
