What: The partnership between the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and Special Olympics Massachusetts continues to grow, now with over 80 schools participating in Unified Track & Field. Athletes will showcase their skills in field events – the long jump, shot put and javelin along with 800, 100 and 400 meter races on the track.
There will also be two relay competitions – 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meters. Medals will be awarded to the champion and runner-up teams. In March, Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools programs drew national attention when the federal funding allocated to these programs was put at risk.
These school-based programs, separate from Special Olympics community-based programs and teams, provide inclusive sports and leadership opportunities in 500 Massachusetts schools.
