Providence, RI – April 28, 2010 - Classical High School junior Amber Johnson took top honors at Tuesday evening’s Poetry Out Loud national finals in Washington, DC, winning the national championship one month after winning the Rhode Island competition sponsored locally by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and VSA arts of Rhode Island.
As National champion, Johnson will receive a $20,000 award and her high school, Classical High School in Providence, will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. The Poetry Out Loud National Finals were held last night at the George Washington University Lisner Auditorium in Washington, DC. Johnson was among nine finalists and 53 state champions from around the country who participated in the fifth national poetry recitation contest, sponsored by the National Arts Endowment and the Poetry Foundation.
