Mrs. DePrete’s 3rd Grade Class

The Hornbine School is a restored 19th century one room school house located in Rehoboth at the corner of Hornbine Road and Baker Street. This year, during May and June, over thirty, third grade classes from several towns visited the school.

On Monday, June 1st, the first of seven Palmer River third grades visited Hornbine School to reenact a 19th century school day. Frances Magan Jones, a lifetime resident of Rehoboth, spoke to the class about her family’s involvement with the Hornbine School. She was a student at the school many years ago. Frances Magan’s father, Manuel S. Magan Jr. and her uncles Henry and Arthur, as well as her brother Clarence also attended the Hornbine School.

Frances Magan Jones’ father, Manuel S. Magan Jr. and her uncles Henry and Arthur, as well as her brother Clarence

Although most children ate their lunch at school, Frances and her brother Clarence walked home for lunch. They lived just a few houses from the school.

While Frances was a little girl, her mother would get up early each morning and walk down to the school. It was her responsibility to start the stove and sweep the floors as well as to keep a container of water available for the students’ thirst. After returning home, she would wake the children and cook breakfast for her family.

Francis in her twenties

Mrs. Magan with her son Clarence

Frances’ grandson Jonathan Drown, who is a student in Mrs. DelPrete’s third grade class at Palmer River School, enjoyed listening to his grandmother’s recollections of her involvement with the school. Frances and Jonathan visit Hornbine School often during the open house Sunday’s.

Frances Magan Jones and her grandson Jonathan Drown at the Hornbine School

The public is encouraged to take advantage of Rehoboth’s historic schoolhouse and visit any second and fourth Sunday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. during the summer. Who knows, you may have a chance to talk with Frances Magan Jones and other interesting visitors who frequent our open houses.

Some of Feehan’s Girls Lacrosse players from the 2010 team with Denis Murphy, the father of Jaclyn and the founder of the Friends of Jaclyn (FOJ) Foundation.

The Friends of Jaclyn organization was started a few years ago after the Northwestern Women’s Lacrosse Team was introduced to Jaclyn, a young child with a brain tumor, meeting her and then sending her messages of love and support as she recovered. Her parents said that this “adoption” by the team made a world of difference and after seeing how successful it was with their child, they formed the FOJ Foundation to help pair up other teams with children who have brain tumors. Since then, hundreds of lacrosse teams across the country have been “adopting” young children with brain tumors to offer them love, support, and friendship. Denis Murphy, father of Jaclyn and founder of the FOJ, drove from New York to accept a check for $1160.20 and to personally thank the girls for their continued support of the program. It is the teams’ wish to eventually ‘adopt’ a child of their own.

St. Mary-Sacred Heart School bid a fond farewell to its 8th grade students Friday night, as the 25 students graduated during a Mass at Sacred Heart Church. Father David Costa, director of the school, addressed the 8th graders during his homily and asked them to “Do Something Great” as they venture out of their elementary school with the strong foundation, which the school and their parents have provided them.

Many of the students had started with the school in Kindergarten and their principal Denise Peixoto spoke of some of the many milestones the students made over the last 9 years. Reminding them of their Kindergarten Christmas play, their 1st grade portrayal of Saints, their 2nd grade Martin Luther King Tea with their parents, Their 4th grade Stations of the cross, The 6th grade barter market, all the way though until their recent field trip into Boston, where the students now much like brothers and sisters spent the day in the city in one last hurrah together, as fellow classmates.

Bishop Feehan High School’s Principal, Bill Runey addressed the graduates, while giving the school’s teachers and principal of St. Mary-Sacred Heart School high accolades on how well prepared the graduates will be as the venture on to high-school. He also presented three of the graduates with scholarship awards two winners Kevin Petterson and Meghan Dion received the Tondreault Scholarship. Elaney Alexandra Marcotte received the principal’s scholarship from Feehan.

The student council Vice President, Kevin Petterson, addressed his fellow 8th grade students and spoke about how he sees his graduating class much like a baseball team. He quoted Paul Richards, an Orioles baseball Manager of long ago by saying, “Baseball is made up of very few big dramatic moments, but rather it’s a beautifully put together pattern of countless little subtleties that finally add up to the big moment.” Kevin compared that to the last nine years, that he and his classmates had been together leading up to the big moment of graduation.

As the graduation commenced the students, their parents and the teachers of the school were treated to a mock Hawaiian Luau in the Church hall, where the students gave final good byes to teachers and friends.

The month of May is traditionally known as the Month of Mary in the Catholic Church, and St. Mary-Sacred Heart School has been honoring her each year by having its second grade class dressed in their First Communion outfits crown a statue of Mother Mary with flowers atop her head. Father Costa performed a prayer service, as 8th grade students placed bunches of flowers around Mother Mary’s feet, and the second graders place the crown on her head.
