The Community Players Celebrate 90 Years With Oklahoma!
November 5th, 2010 · No Comments
The Community Players celebrate their 90th Anniversary Season with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical, Oklahoma! With a record-breaking 1943 opening run on Broadway, Oklahoma! ushered in the “Golden Age” of American musical theatre, inspiring the Oscar-winning film adaptation and countless revivals over the years, winning the Pulitzer Prize, Tony Awards and several international awards along the way. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road.
Filled with lively dance numbers and familiar show-tunes including Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’, Surrey with the Fringe on Top and People Will Say We’re In Love, Oklahoma! will leave audiences smiling and humming along. Directed by Timothy Reid, with musical direction by Ron Procopio, Oklahoma! will be presented November 5-7, 12-14 and 19-21 at Jenks Auditorium, Division Street, Pawtucket, RI (across from McCoy Stadium). Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, with Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students through high school. Reserve online at www.thecommunityplayers.org or call (401) 726-6860.
