Venturing Crew 007 which is sponsored by Central Congregational Church
in Attleboro Falls recently hosted and were the lead instructors in a wilderness survival weekend which was held on a primitive out camp based in Plymouth on the shores of Darby pond. The theme for the weekend was wilderness survival and search and rescue. We had (32) youth representing crews from all over Massachusetts who banded together and became fast friends. The weekend was broken into learning and practicing the following skills, Fire building, Knots, Shelter building. Water purification and wilderness camping skills. During the weekend event the crew members were also exposed to basic SAR skills, “hands-on” style, from the Central Massachusetts Search and Rescue Team. CMSART members Ron Deschamps, Ed LeVine, and Karl Gustafson lead the youth during a 5 hour presentation. After an overview of CMSART, team member training and experiences, they learned about the sizeable overlap between skills learned in scouting, and those needed for wilderness search and rescue. They also attended workshops on survival, staying found, SAR gear, and use of the Stokes litter for carry-outs. The youth participated in a mock line search through the woods for objects, and then were rushed into a line search for a mock live injured subject in the woods. Thru stop-action, step-by-step commentary and direction, they participated in the medical assessment, stabilization, packaging, and strenuous carryout of their subject. The youth sat around the fire late into the night enjoying good food and new friendships.
Venturing Crew 007 is a co-ed crew based in Attleboro Falls, Massachusetts and sponsored by the Central Congregational Church. Venturing Crews are a fairly new program of the Boy Scouts of America, Venturing is open to young men and women aged 14 – 20 years old.
Our Crew’s emphasis is on high adventure to provide team-building opportunities, new meaningful experiences, practical leadership applications, and life-long memories for young adults.
Our Crew specializes in , camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities. As a
Venturing Crew, we strive to have fun, keep a healthy mind and body and try new and exciting things. We strive to become elite outdoorsmen and women by challenging ourselves in the outdoors, and will stay focused to develop leadership skills, interact with and serve our community. We raise our own funds and do want the youth leaders in crew decide to do. In the last few years we have canoed the Batten kill river on the New York, Vermont border.
Have spent a week in a remote camp on the Vermont. Some of the crewites did a (60) mile backpacking trek through the high desert of New Mexico. Along with camping we also do our fair share of just fun social activities. We have built a Halloween haunted house fundraiser; we have hosted an all night ultimate videogame Tournament, along with our fair share of pasta suppers, bake sales, and pancake breakfasts to raise our funds. This summer we are planning a weeklong trip to upstate New York for camping and sightseeing.
If you are a boy or girl scout, or if you have never been a part of scouting
but like to camp, hike, canoe, kayak, shoot, or make new friends while sitting around a campfire – it’s time to become a Venturer (or 007’s “Crewites,” as we like to call ourselves)!
