Local Skeptic Searches For Life Beyond Earth
For years Dave Downs, a local retired teacher, has been looking into reported sightings of UFOs and other "unexplained" phenomena. Downs, a past president of the New England UFO Study Group, will present results of local UFO investigations at The Gladys Hurrell Senior Center in Rehoboth this Thursday, January 10th at 1:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend. "Most witnesses I talk with seem honest and actually believe they've watched a space ship or other unexplained phenomena." reports Downs. "But time after time, when supplied with enough facts, analysis shows witnesses have most likely seen planets, the moon, or airplanes, etc. possibly shrouded by clouds."  Mr. Downs will feature a daylight Rehoboth UFO sighting which occurred on Dean Street in 1976 during his presentation and slide show given for "The Best is Yet to Come"

"The Best is Yet to Come" is a group of seniors. They meet at 1:00 p.m. every 2nd Thursday of the month at the Gladys Hurrell Senior Center located at 55 Bay State Road in Rehoboth. "The Best is Yet to Come" is a new group open to seniors from Rehoboth and surrounding towns. Dues are six dollars a year. Guests are always welcome to attend. Call Loraine Botts, the group's secretary, at 508-252-4593 for more information.

INNOVATIVE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

STARTS IN REHOBOTH

Sitting around the kitchen table last fall, Julia Sweet, met with family tutor, Kilian Sullivan-Silva, to brain-stormed about what parents really need in an after-school program. Julia, owner of Fitness Mom Studio in Rehoboth, is the mother of two, and Kilian is the mother of four, all of whom she home-schools.

The repeating themes were that children today are spending too much time being inactive - watching television and playing video games; that they are not necessarily making the best nutritional choices at snack time; and that many need homework help and tutoring under the guidance of a "third party" - someone other than their parents – in order to free up the evening for quality family time. Another important concern working parents often share is how are they going to transport their children from school to their after-school activities. The program also needs to be long enough for parents who leave their workplace at 5:00 and need extra time to get home.

During the next several weeks, the program was planned, refined, and evolved into, "Muscles and Minds™" - an after-school program that provides a nurturing, positive environment for children and gives equal consideration to the needs of busy parents.

Here is what the two have planned for Fall 2007. Each day is divided into blocks of time devoted to one-hour of a fitness or sports activity, snack time (healthy combinations certified by a registered dietician), and homework help or private tutoring. Tuesdays and Thursday are TaeKwonDo Martial Arts classes taught by Kukkiwon (the most prestigious) certified Black Belts. Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays are dedicated to creative fitness and sports activities – many ideas taken from Julia’s book, "365 Activities for Fitness, Food, and Fun for the Whole Family" (McGraw Hill). Friday holds a special weekly event – the Oak Knoll Audubon Sanctuary will provide a fascinating nature and science program that follows the MCAS framework – this is done in lieu of homework help. Topics include: "Homes are Habitats", Animal Adaptation", "Exploring Fossils", "Creepy Crawly Insects" and "Tree-mendous!"

Local parents have the option of making arrangements with the school to have their child take the bus directly to the Studio where they will be met at the bus stop by the staff. In addition, the programs generally run for 2½-hours which makes rushing back from work less stressful. The Studio maintains an open door policy where parents and grandparents can pop in at anytime and even participate in the fun. "Our reading room is designed to look and feel like the family livingroom rather than a school room or library" shares Julia.

Another feature is that tutors, including certified reading specialists , are available by request for all grade levels in a variety of subjects. This is available for year-long help or for periodic preparation for an upcoming exam.
Muscles and Minds™ keeps the ratio of children to staff at 5:1. Our adult staff are experienced parents and teachers. Model mentors ("teen helpers") also help the children. All staff are "back-ground-checked" and must be CPR certified. Most importantly, they are wonderful with children. "We care for our children, as we would for our own." An added bonus..."We even teach manners. A benefit the parents love!" says Julia Sweet.

Evening classes begin at 6:00PM and are open to adults and teens. Classes include Zumba Latin and Carribean Aerobics , Belly Dancing with Neylan, Strength Training and Core Conditioning, Yoga Flow, Ballroom Dancing with champion dancer, Efrosyni, Boxing Circuit, TaeKwonDo Martila Arts/Self-Defense, and a Cardio Fitness Variety Class.

You may find out more about the program online at www.fitnessmom.com or by calling Julia Sweet at (508) 336-0123. Muscles and Minds™ is located at Fitness Mom® Studio at 340 Anawan Street (in the back) Rt. 118 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts.
