Following a series of off-season tryouts, the Swansea Independent Baseball League has selected four teams of current registrants that will compete during the spring of 2008 in the New England District of AAU Baseball.
According to President Ken Garcia, the SIBL will field two teams this year in AAU’s 10-and-Under Division and one team apiece in the 11-and-Under and 13-and-Under divisions. All competing players will also be enrolled in the league’s regular-season program this year.

According to Garcia, the 2008 season will mark the fourth successive season in which the SIBL has fielded AAU teams. “AAU competition gives SIBL players the opportunity to test and improve their skills against talented players and strong teams in a no-lose situation,” Garcia said. “While our teams have fared well in AAU play during the past three years and have won many more games than they have lost, the primary objective of this part of our program is not winning; it’s developing our players and giving them the chance to play more games and against stiff competition.” According to Garcia, all four SIBL AAU squads will play regular-season games in April and May and enter their respective annual New England District tournaments in June. |

The 10B all-star team of the Swansea Independent Baseball League recently fared well in two local tournaments.
The SIBL entry won two of five games in the Dighton Youth Baseball Invitational Tournament and later won three of five starts in the Swansea Little League’s second Minor League Tournament this summer, closing as runners-up. The SIBL club had won the first Swansea Little League event, held in July.
Swansea’s roster this summer included Steven Forte, Chandler Furtado, Brenen Cardoza, Austin St. Pierre, Aaram Williams, Jameson Rose, Jesse Mendes, Tony deSimas, Ryan Arruda, Conor Carmichael, Chris Kinder, Jakob Hadad, Anthony Watkinson, manager Mike Kinder and coaches Greg Mendes and Wayne Williams.
SIBL stars conclude second in Swansea
After bowing to Somerset I (9-4) in its tournament debut, the SIBL entry ripped off successive victories over the Swansea Minors (15-3), Swansea II (24-3) and Somerset Minors (13-3) before losing again to Somerset I, 15-8, in the championship clash.
Somerset I erased a 1-0 deficit with a four-run surge in the bottom of the first inning and was never headed, eventually peaking its advantage at nine runs. The winners scored in every inning but the second to claim the tourney title.
Furtado and Mendes both cracked three hits for Swansea, one more than St. Pierre. Cardoza, St. Pierre and Arruda all pitched for the SIBL squad.
Somerset I also scored in every inning but the second to decisively defeat the SIBL stars, 9-4, in the tourney opener. DeSimas slashed three hits for Swansea, while St. Pierre, Furtado and Rose all registered two safeties.
The SIBL club cracked the win column with its 15-3 trimming of the Swansea Minors, highlighted by a 10-run uprising in the second inning. Arruda, Rose, Furtado and Cardoza all recorded two hits for the winners, while Cardoza and Furtado shared the pitching duties.
The SIBL squad exploded for 16 runs in the bottom of the first inning to fuel its 24-3 win over Swansea II. Carmichael concluded with four hits for the winners, while Arruda, St. Pierre, Cardoza, Mendes and Furtado all chipped in with a couple of safeties.
Carmichael, St. Pierre, Kinder and Arruda all pitched well for the winners.
The SIBL contingent then advanced to the title game by ousting the Someset Minors, 13-3, thanks to three hits from Mendes and two apiece by St. Pierre, Kinder and Furtado. Cardoza earned the pitching decision with relief help from Furtado.
Swansea wins twice in Dighton
Playing primarily against A-level teams, the SIBL stars went 2-3 in the recent Dighton tournament, defeating Maplewood of Fall River (16-8) and host Dighton (15-5), while falling to the South Coast Shamrocks (8-3), Fall River Federal (9-8) and Wareham (8-5).
Against Maplewood, Swansea erupted for seven runs in the top of the first inning, then sealed the victory with successive four-run outbursts in the fifth and sixth frames. Carmichael, Forte, Cardoza and Furtado all sparked the winners with two hits.
Opposite Dighton, Cardoza slashed four hits, Forte ended with three hits and St. Pierre and Rose both contributed two hits as Swansea snapped a 1-1 deadlock with a five-run explosion in the second chapter and a six-run surge in the third inning.
In the loss to the Shamrocks, the SIBL club trailed by just a 4-3 margin after five innings before the victors produced three insurances scores in the final frame. Kinder topped Swansea with two hits.
The SIBL squad trailed by a 9-3 tally versus Federal until rallying, finally coming up just one run shy of tying the contest. Cardoza collected three hits for Swansea, one more than teammates Furtado and St. Pierre.
Wareham broke a scoreless draw by pushing cross seven runs in the top of the fourth inning, then held off a late SIBL rally to earn its 8-5 win. Furtado ripped two hits for Swansea, which enjoyed a four-run output in the fifth frame.
