African American and Cape Verdean College Hill: Public Meeting May 15th

B RICHP 49-51OlneySt

The National Register nomination for one of Rhode Island’s most significant historic districts is being updated to reflect the area’s African American and Cape Verdean heritage. Rhode island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission and Rhode Island Black Heritage Society will host a meeting to share information and invite public comment about the expanded nomination on Tuesday, May 15 at 6:00 pm at the Old State House, 150 Benefit Street in Providence.

Historian Kathryn Grover and architectural historian Neil Larson will share their research and take questions.

In 1916, the house at 49-51 Olney Street was acquired by William H. Gross, who worked as a janitor, and his son Carl, a physician. The Gross family lived in 49 Olney Street, while Carl set up his medical practice in the other half of the dwelling, where it remained until 1942
