Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England Partners with Green Planet Films
Warwick, R.I. (April 29, 2025)—Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England partnered with Green Planet Films to run a filmmaking workshop for Senior Girl Scouts (grades 9 and 10). During April break, five Senior Girl Scouts wrote, researched, and directed their own original documentaries at Westerly Library and Wilcox Park!

Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England (GSSNE) is devoted to providing experiential education opportunities to girls and gender-expansive youth of all ages. Through this mission, an idea sparked for an interactive filmmaking workshop for Senior Girl Scouts. GSSNE’s Program Staff began searching for local organizations with which to partner and Green Planet Films of Stonington, CT enthusiastically joined the collaborative project and provided each Girl Scout with the recording and editing equipment they needed.
Each Girl Scout chose their own topic to research within the library, performed prerequisite research in the computer lab, and conducted interviews with distinguished faculty of the library and park. After recording and editing, Green Planet Films hosted a screening of the Girl Scouts’ films in the auditorium.

“This April vacation, Green Planet Films was fortunate to work with Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England for the first time. We collaborated on a three-day filmmaking workshop hosted by the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park. Amidst the emergence of springtime, the Girl Scouts came with courage and curiosity and left the workshop with a sense of accomplishment and a new short documentary produced and directed by each participant.

We learned that Girl Scouts are amazing independent documentary filmmakers! They are persistent, focused, and flexible. When they hit a challenge, they adapted and found a way to move forward. I loved watching their films and learned a lot from their explorations of the Library and Park. I especially loved their positivity and kindness. It’s a quality they showed to each other and everyone they interacted with on the library and park staff. These are some very talented Girl Scouts,” said Chris Kepple, Director of Green Planet Films

GSSNE would like to thank Cox Charities for making this program possible and giving our Girl Scouts incredible opportunities!

We Are Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs across Southeastern New England, girls and gender-expansive youth of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves in a safe space as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges.
Backed strong friendships and trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them. Girl Scouts feel comfortable trying new things without the pressure to be perfect, speaking their minds, and processing their emotions in healthy ways. They discover how being different makes them special, strengthens their sense of belonging, and, ultimately, makes them proud to be themselves. That’s the magic of Girl Scouting.
