MAYOR GREBIEN: RI SOCCER DAY

Dear Pawtucket Residents,

Last week, we celebrated a milestone that honors both our city’s rich history and its promising future: the first-ever RI Soccer Day in Pawtucket, officially declared by resolution and marked by the raising of the Rhode Island FC flag outside City Hall.

RI Soccer Day honors our city’s historic connection to the game of soccer and sets the stage for a new chapter. Pawtucket has been part of the sport’s story in this country since the late 1800s. From the days of the Pawtucket Free Wanderers to hosting the first National Challenge Cup at Coats Field in 1914, our city has long been home to passionate players and fans alike.

Now, we look ahead to the opening of Centreville Bank Stadium. I am so excited to attend opening day and celebrate with fans from across the state and beyond. The stadium represents the largest private investment in our area in over a century and will be a powerful driver of opportunity and growth.

I want to thank everyone who helped make this celebration possible. RI Soccer Day is a celebration of who we’ve been and who we are becoming. We are proud to be the home of Rhode Island FC and proud to welcome the next generation of soccer fans to Pawtucket.

Sincerely,

Donald R. Grebien
Mayor of Pawtucket
