THREE ON GOING EXHIBITS
Contemporary Art

Ongoing
The contemporary art gallery chronicles the past eight decades as a still-evolving chapter, illustrating how artists across disciplines, generations, and geographies respond to the experiences of their time. From the mid-20th century to works being created today, contemporary art challenges conventions, explores new media, and expands our shared visual language.
Examples from mid-century through the 1970s, including iconic works by Grace Hartigan, Alex Katz, Louise Nevelson, and Andy Warhol provide visitors with landmarks from which to explore more recent contributions by artists including Tony Feher, Jeffrey Gibson, Beatriz Milhazes, Nam June Paik, Doris Salcedo, Yinka Shonibare, and Kiki Smith.
Ancient Art

Ongoing
Ancient art spans several galleries on the Museum’s first floor, including the awe-inspiring Renaissance Court. Covering millennia of early creative expression, these galleries highlight artworks from ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and more. The Hunt mosaic, a 500-square-foot floor from the ancient city of Antioch, makes a dramatic impression at the Salisbury Street entrance, an invitation to explore thousands of years of our collective history of art.
Conservation Now: The Higgins Armory Collection

Ongoing
Not everyone gets an anvil in their office. Bill MacMillan, the Museum’s Arms and Armor Conservator, does. Bill is working to conserve a collection of over 1,000 swords, shields, helmets, and more, ensuring the objects look their best when the Museum opens its upcoming galleries for arms and armor.
You are invited to watch along through the doors of the Jeppson Idea Lab, where Bill’s full workstation is now on view. Get an early glimpse at these objects under laboratory conditions, and follow their progress through a fascinating conservation process that is equal parts technical and creative.
