Linden Place Presents One-Woman Play, Charlotte Brontë: Ascend the Gale

Bristol, R.I.- Linden Place invites the public to a special theatrical performance on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 2:00 PM, featuring Charlotte Brontë: Ascend the Gale, a one-woman play written and performed by acclaimed actress and playwright Laura Rocklyn.

Set in 1853, shortly after the publication of Charlotte Brontë’s third and most personal novel, Villette, this powerful performance brings audiences directly into the writer’s world. Charlotte reflects on her extraordinary family, her unconventional education, and the transformative years she spent in Brussels that inspired her most recent work.

With wit, honesty, and passion, she shares the difficulties and unexpected opportunities that literary fame has brought into her life, while also revealing the hardships faced by single women striving to earn a living and a name for themselves as authors. The play explores how Charlotte and her remarkable sisters strove to rise above these societal barriers, ultimately leaving an enduring mark on the literary world.

The program runs approximately 40 minutes, followed by a 15–20 minute audience Q&A with Laura Rocklyn. Tickets are $25 general admission and $20 for Linden Place members. They are available online or by calling 401-253-0390.

Laura Rocklyn is an accomplished actress, playwright, and literary scholar whose solo performances bring historical figures and beloved literary characters vividly to life. She has performed at theaters and historic venues nationwide, with a special focus on works inspired by women writers of the 18th and 19th centuries.
