Hands-On with Helaine: Sailor’s Valentine Workshop

Bass River Arts Campus – Makerspace

WHAT TO EXPECT: Sailor’s Valentines were classic souvenirs favored by Nantucket whalemen in the 19th century. Join this 3-class workshop with artist Helaine Buckley and make your own in this age-old shellcrafting tradition. Create a unique patters and choose from a variety of beautiful seashells of all colors and sizes to create a framed Sailor’s Valentine in a large hexagonal shadowbox suitable for hanging.

All materials will be provided.

EXTRAS: Each student will create a unique heirloom-worthy work of art.

DON’T FORGET: Bring any special shells or mementos you want to incorporate into your design. This class is in the Adams Makerspace in the Lower Level of the Education Wing.

INSTRUCTOR: Helaine Buckley earned her BFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design. After working for 10 years as a photography gallery director/curator of the Berenice Abbott Estate, she achieved her MAT in Art Education. She taught art in New Jersey for 16 years. In 2003, the Lab School of Washington and The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation selected her as one of the top 30 Art Teachers in the United States. Upon retiring, she moved to Cape Cod and started making Stained Glass. Her creative interests include fiber arts, basket weaving, mixed media printmaking as well as photography and stained glass. Her photography has been exhibited in New York, New Jersey, and China.

Bundle Dyeing with Plants & Flowers

LENGTH: 1 class, 2 hours

WHAT TO EXPECT: Learn about dyeing with natural materials and create a beautiful and unique scarf in this botanical printing bundle dye workshop! Using fresh flowers and leaves, you’ll arrange them on fabric, carefully bundle them up, and then steam the bundle. Once it’s cool enough, you’ll unwrap it to reveal the prints and colors that the plants have transferred permanently onto the fabric. All materials are provided and each participant leaves with a work of art they can wear.

EXTRAS: You’ll go home with instructions to try botanical dyeing at home.

DON’T FORGET: Dress to make art. The Abbott Studio is upstairs in the Education Wing.

INSTRUCTOR: Becca Zaremba is the maker behind Northeast Dyeworks. Driven by a lifelong love of nature, she believes in harnessing the beauty of the natural world to give plants and flowers a second life.

Stained Glass Lab with Mike: All Levels

Bass River – Makerspace

6 Tuesdays, Sep 23-Oct 28, 530-830pm. Member $360, Not-Yet-Member $396

LENGTH: 6 3-hour classes

LEVEL: all levels, teens welcome with a parent

WHAT TO EXPECT: Come to the glass lab! All levels are welcome in this exciting and fun stained glass class with artist Mike Walter. Absolute beginners will learn the basics: choose a pattern for a simple panel, pick your colors from the glass library, then learn to cut and fit the pieces, prepare them for assembly, solder them together, then frame your finished piece.

More advanced beginner and intermediate students will choose more complex patterns or design their own project. All materials and tools are provided. No experience required and every student will get individual attention. Come make something beautiful!

EXTRAS: Every student will complete at least one unique work of art, maybe more!

DON’T FORGET: Wear close-toed shoes and tie long hair back. This class is held in the Makerspace on the lower level of the Education Wing.

INSTRUCTOR: Mike Walter has been an artisan working with glass and wood for over 20 years. The joy of the project is his motto. He has studied in glass at Diablo School of Glass and wood at The North Bennet School and Penland School of Craft. His love of tinkering and learning new skills leads him in many directions; electrical, metal, tile, plastics. You never know what might add flair to a project. He loves to mentor and teach people of all ages. He thinks everyone should be able to work with their hands and make something they are proud of and hang on their wall or window. Or better yet, leave as legacy piece to their kids or grandkids to be handed down for generations.
