The Looff Carousel in Slater Park was carved by Charles I.D. Looff in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1895. It was originally placed in Lee Funland in Troy, N.Y. until 1910, when it was moved to Slater Park.
This stationary and world’s oldest “stander” carousel is comprised of 44 horses, three dogs, one lion, one camel, one giraffe, and two chariots, all intricately hand carved. The carousel is also one of six carousels in the country that is still housed in its original building, a 12-sided building in the Looff style with a cupola and original stained-glass windows made by the Sandwich Glass Works in Sandwich, Massachusetts.
In 2022, as recognition of the City of Pawtucket’s investments in the maintenance of the Carousel, Pawtucket had earned Preserve Rhode Island’s “Rhody Award” in the Stewardship category. The Slater Park Carousel has a reputation as being one of the best maintained, most historic, fastest, and most affordable carousels in the country.
