Bass River – Makerspace
Mon & Wed, Feb 9 & 11, 10-2pm. Member $200, Not-Yet-Member $220
LENGTH: 8 hours over 2 classes
LEVEL: beginner and beyond
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Join master woodworker Stephen Conlin for an introduction to traditional woodworking with hand tools and build a Shaker-style step stool.
Working with wood by hand is a meditative experience, rich in sensory pleasures – hearing subtle differences in the sound of a plane gliding over a board, feeling a sharp chisel cut through the wood, and smelling fresh-cut lumber. In this 2-day workshop, we’ll focus on the process and the experience as well the finished object.
Students will learn the basics of traditional woodworking, including wood characteristics, stock selection and preparation, layout, basic joinery and project assembly.
Prior basic experience with woodworking is helpful but not required.
We may tailor various aspects of the project to the experience level of participants, such as using simpler features and techniques for beginners and more advanced features and techniques for experienced participants.
EXTRAS: Bring a brown-bag lunch or snack for the short break.
DON’T FORGET: This class is held downstairs in the Education Wing.
SAVE: Save $20 on this class by purchasing a membership for only $65 and get discounts on classes and events year-round at the Center.
INSTRUCTOR: Stephen Conlin is passionate about woodworking and traditional woodworking techniques. He has been working with wood for his entire life, escaping to the shop on nights and weekends as an antidote to his day-time desk job. For him, there are few things more satisfying than paring with a chisel to get a perfect fit on a mortise and tenon joint or using a hand plane to produce an almost glass like surface on a piece of figured wood. The finished product is always nice, but it’s the process of using your hands to makes things that’s most fulfilling. Stephen is experienced in almost all types of woodworking, and he is particularly interested in reproducing period furniture using hand tools.
