MAYOR GREBIEN ADRESSING SNAP GAP

Dear neighbor,

Earlier this week, I joined Governor Dan McKee, Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos, elected leaders, and mayors from across the state at the ELISHA Project here in Pawtucket to help prepare nearly 10,000 pounds of fresh produce for Rhode Island families.

With November SNAP benefits paused and more than 140,000 Rhode Islanders relying on this critical program, our community is stepping up to ensure no one goes hungry while we await federal action.

This is why the City of Pawtucket felt compelled to join a nationwide coalition seeking restoration of SNAP benefits. This afternoon, we were victorious, and we thank the Lawyers’ Committee of Rhode Island for their tremendous advocacy on this issue.

Not one — but two federal judges — issued rulings in favor of the City of Pawtucket and a coalition of cities and organizations, including the cities of Providence and Central Falls, fighting to protect food assistance during the shutdown.

This ruling blocks harmful cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and affirms our stance that families should not bear the burden of federal gridlock.

It is now up to the White House to do the right thing and use federal contingency funds to ensure families continue receiving benefits without interruption.

Here in Pawtucket, we are continuing to support residents facing food uncertainty by collecting dry goods and non-perishables during regular business hours at:

Pawtucket City Hall

Fogarty Manor

All Pawtucket Public Schools & the Central Office

We have also launched an Emergency SNAP Support Line: (401) 728-0500 ext. 278 and are working to activate an emergency relief fund to provide direct support to families in need.

Pawtucket will always stand with our neighbors and ensure no one goes hungry. If you or someone you know is experiencing hardship as a result of the suspension of SNAP benefits, please click here to access our SNAP Resource Guide.

Sincerely,

Mayor Donald R. Grebien

City of Pawtucket
