ABOUT THE JUROR

Toots Zynsky received her BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1973. From 1971-73 she assisted in the founding and  early development of Pilchuck Glass School – now in its 54th year. From 1980-83, she was a key  participant in the rebuilding and development of the second New York Experimental Glass Workshop, now Urban Glass. Living and maintaining her studio in Europe from 1983-199,  Zynsky collaborated with Dutch artist/inventor Mathijs Teunissen Van Manen to design/build a  series of glass thread-pulling machines, ultimately developing her unique filet-de-verre technique and designing specialized energy efficient electric kilns in service of her unique new process. From  1984-1985 they lived in Ghana, West Africa and, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, carried out a 6-month music recording project all over the country. Returning to the USA in 1999 with her family, she now lives and works in Providence, RI.

She is a 2015 recipient of the Smithsonian Institute Visionary Award. In 2016 Zynsky was selected as the artist to receive Corning’s prestigious Specialty Glass Residency, enabling her to collaborate with their research facility’s scientists using highly specialized materials,
