Providence, Rhode Island – For 60 years, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has connected Rhode Islanders to work, school, healthcare, and opportunity. Since its founding in 1966, RIPTA has grown from a traditional bus service into a modern public transportation system that serves communities across the state and continues to evolve to meet the needs of today’s riders and tomorrow’s Rhode Island.
As RIPTA marks its 60th anniversary this year, the Authority is celebrating not only where it has been, but also where it is going next.
“For six decades, RIPTA has played a critical role in the daily lives of Rhode Islanders,” said Chief Executive Officer Christopher Durand. “Moving over 42,000 people daily would not be possible without our employees, state leaders, and community partners who have shaped RIPTA’s history. We are proud of how far we’ve come, and we’re excited about the future of public transit in our state.”
Today, the Authority is building on that foundation by advancing initiatives that support both service improvements and long-term financial sustainability.
Those efforts include expanding partnerships through programs such as Wave to Work, which helps employers provide transit benefits to employees while increasing ridership and improving access to jobs; aligning service to workplaces schedules at Quonset Business Park; piloting Flex On Demand service on Aquidneck Island and Woonsocket; and leveraging federal grant funds to explore ways to provide faster, more frequent, and more reliable transit service across metropolitan Providence, through the Metro Connector Study.
RIPTA is also continuing to evaluate service improvements, improve the passenger experience, and explore innovative transit options that make public transportation more convenient and attractive for both current and future riders.
RIPTA’s 60th anniversary celebration will continue throughout the year with events and programming that recognize the Authority’s employees, honor its history, and engage the public in the future of transit. Anniversary programming will include employee appreciation activities, an open house at RIPTA’s headquarters, a documentary screening about RIPTA’s 60-year history, and other special events to be announced in the coming months.
“This anniversary is about more than looking back,” Durand said. “It is about recognizing the people who built RIPTA, celebrating the employees and riders who keep it moving today, and sharing a vision for what comes next. We are working to create a stronger transit system that supports our economy, serves our communities, and delivers better service for Rhode Islanders.”
