BAY VIEW ACADEMY STUDENT FROM CUMBERLAND SELECTED FOR GIRLS NATION

East Providence – Two Bay View Academy students, Amelia Larson (Cumberland) and Chloe Headrick (Bristol), participated in the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program from June 20th – 24th. According to www.rialaux.org, Girls??? State is a ???participatory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county and state government including elections and debates. During the week long live in program participants learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. The training is objective and centers on the structure of city, county and state government.?????

The Girls State program is a leadership laboratory. A fictional self-governing state of young ladies elect their own leaders, write bills for debate and run a legislative session. In the process, these leaders???class presidents, top varsity athletes, debate champions???dynamically engage with state representatives and senators. Two participants from each of 49 states are selected to attend the elite American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation in Washington DC, where they have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the President of the United States.??

During this year???s Girls??? State program, Chloe Headrick was elected ???Governor??? and Amelia Larson was elected ???Lieutenant Governor.???????

Amelia (Cumberland) has the honor of being selected to attend Girls Nation in Washington, D.C., from July 23rd through 30th. Chloe was chosen as an alternate if Amelia was not able to attend.
