STUDENTS MAKE PAPER CRANES FOR PEACE
As an enrichment activity, the fifth graders at St. John the Evangelist School in Attleboro read a book called A Diamond in the Desert.
The book is an historical fiction account of a young boy of Japanese descent whose family is sent to the Gila River internment camp in Arizona during World War II.
One of the characters in the story makes paper cranes. Because they symbolize peace, the students wanted to make cranes to send to the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation, which seeks to educate students about the confinement of Japanese Americans and how the lessons learned from that experience are relevant today.
