East Providence, ??RI – This February, Bay View’s Spanish Club sold handmade bracelets and bags during school lunch to benefit the Pulsera Project, ???a nonprofit organization that educates, empowers, and connects Central American artists with students in more than 1,600 U.S. schools through the sale of colorful handwoven bracelets, or ???pulseras??? in Spanish??? (pulseraproject.org). Bracelets were sold for $5 each. Handmade bags sold for $10 each. The goal of the Spanish Club was to raise $800, but they exceeded their goal by raising $1,020. All of the money was sent back to the Pulsera Project, which provides employment for nearly 200 Central American artists, and supports ???educational programs, scholarships, workers’ rights, community development, housing programs, youth shelters, and a wide range of other projects.???

Junior Neomy Delacruz (Providence), president of Bay View???s Spanish Club, shares her thoughts and experience with the Pulsera Project:??
???It’s been a great experience selling the bracelets. From first opening the box to finally sending out the check, I was always very involved and I hope we turn this into a tradition. To know you are giving back to not only an organization, but to actual people is very rewarding and humbling. Each bracelet shows who made it and it reminds us that with little acts we can change the world. The artists who make each bracelet remind us that we are all part of a bigger picture. They make their living through these bracelets and in times of need, they always know they can rely on the Pulsera Project. We may see it as just a bracelet, but to the artists it truly is their life and livelihood.???
