Democracy, Diversity, and Higher Education at Liberal Arts Colleges

Presenter: Dr. Renee T. White, Provost, Wheaton College

Wednesday, June ??7, 2017

1:30 -3:00 pm

Wheaton College Hindle Auditorium Science

There are many reasons why students’ experiences at liberal arts colleges are distinct from other institutions in higher education. We give students the tools to function in a rapidly changing world.

Our interdisciplinary scholarship and problems-based learning make our students facile, nimble, integrative thinkers and doers. Beyond that, our students learn to be civic-minded.

Therefore, leaders in higher education must argue for a broader understanding of diversity and globalization, must show how higher education contributes to democratic practice, and explain why civic engagement is tied to a competitive and employable workforce.

We will discuss how and why liberal arts institutions play a unique role in civic engagement and democratic practice by also exploring ongoing work supported by a partnership between the Council of Europe and the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Renee T. White has been the Provost of Wheaton College since April 2016. Dr. White holds an AB from Brown University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University.??

??NICE Annual Meeting will be immediately after the lecture. Those staying for the meeting will be eligible to win a certificate for a free NICE course.

Please bring no food or drink into the auditorium.????????????????????
