Festival of the Fire Arts??

June 7, 2017- Providence- The Steel Yard’s 5th Annual Fire Camp: Festival of the Fire Arts will be held on June 24th, 2017 on the historic 3.8 acre campus. An estimated 500 guests will attend the open house, engaged in our foundry for a FREE, all ages family friendly one-day event, and experience the magic of the industrial arts first hand!

Fire Camp goers will witness live MIG & TIG welding, plasma cutting straight through steel, wheel throwing (how pottery is made!), blacksmithing, jewelry making, and iron pouring in addition to getting their hands dirty and walking through our studio tours!

But that’s not all- guests get to ??take a little bit of the Yard home by purchasing customizable Iron Relief Tiles, Steel Plates or Raku Pots. Sand Molds allow guests to carve out their own designs, watch as molten iron is poured into the molds and then get go take home the decorative cast iron relief. Designing the Steel Plate is similar- guests draw their design and then watch as the art is brought to life with plasma cutting & welding. ??Last but not least, guests can purchase and paint with lustrous glazes their own raku fired pots. Fire Camp also features a Yardie Garage sale where you can purchase unique items and tools directly from the studio, as well as a Yardie Art Faire featuring ceramics, jewelry and crafts from local artists & makers.

This year we are proud to announce that we’ll be partnering again with Revival Brewing Co. to provide beverages at the event while Picnic and other local vendors provide delicious food. We’re excited to have DJ Unkle Thirsty MCing and providing music all day long, as well as a special guest performance from the Extraordinary Rendition Band.

Fire Camp would not be possible without our amazing sponsors and partners including Rhode Island State Council of the Arts, Holliston Sand, Horsley Witten Group, Cox Communications, Head Light Hotel and Kite Architects.

The Steel Yard is an award-winning industrial arts center and Providence’s largest private outdoor venue. ??The 3.8-acre campus, located in Providence’s Industrial Valley, is a cultural asset that serves as a sponsor and catalyst for innovative approaches to urban revitalization, arts promotion, workforce development, and community growth. The professional workspace allows for community access to equipment for welding, blacksmithing, jewelry, ceramics, and the foundry arts. The facilities at the Yard have become a vital component in the careers of hundreds of independent craftspeople and entrepreneurs who would not otherwise have the capacity to establish their businesses or perfect their crafts while allowing educators the ability to teach students new skills in a creative and communal environment. Over the last 10 years, the Steel Yard has contributed something distinct to the Arts community in Rhode Island by creating shared professional workspace, a venue for the advancement of new sculptural mediums, and a broader definition of public-art
