Providence, RI (March 1, 2018) — Festival Ballet Providence (FBP)’s 40th Anniversary season continues with the second installment of Up Close on Hope, the popular Black Box Theatre series. This intimate evening features the return of Lady of the Camellias, a one-act adaptation of the timeless and tragic Alexandre Dumas story, created by Boston choreographer Gianni Di Marco. The diverse program also features an excerpt from a world premiere by local dance and performance artist yon Tande of the groundbreaking 1913 Stravinsky ballet Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring). The program will also include a thrilling new work by established choreographer Kurt Douglas. The series runs for two weekends, March 9-18, 2018, at the FBP Black Box Theatre (825 Hope St., Providence RI 02906).

Gianni Di Marco’s 2016 adaptation of Lady of the Camellias showcases the choreographer??s lyrical strength and talent for creating intricate pas de deux sequences. This passionate ballet tells the story of French courtesan Marguerite Gautier and her wistful, ill-fated romance with aristocrat Armand Duval. Of its premiere, Broadway World acclaimed, “The true shining moment in this production is when the courtesan and her lover have an extended pas de deux that is so hauntingly beautiful members of the audience were gasping.”??

Local performance artist yon Tande??s work is born from a process of cultivating both individual and communal spirit through creation, education, and curation. Up Close on Hope will feature an excerpt from a larger work in progress, a new adaptation of Stravinsky??s groundbreaking Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring). ??This will be the debut of yon Tande??s choreography for our audience and I??m thrilled he is taking on such an iconic work as Rite of Spring,?? said Mihailo Djuric, FBP Artistic Director. yon Tande??s work has been presented in a variety of performance spaces across the country and the thriving choreographer has inspired dancers through his teachings both locally and internationally, currently at Providence’s Southside Cultural Center of Rhode Island and AS220.??

The program will also feature an exciting new work by Kurt Douglas, former dancer with the Jose Limon Company and current faculty member at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee College. Douglas is the recipient of a 2002 Princess Grace Award, one of the most prestigious awards for emerging professional ballet dancers, and his work promises to enchant audiences with a breath of fresh air.??
