On Saturday, January 19th, from 2:30-4:30 pm, the Art Lovers Book Club presents “Old Masters, New World: America’s Raid on Europe’s  Great Pictures” by Cynthia Saltzman. The event will launch with a presentation focusing on Isabella Stewart Gardner and other female art collectors delivered by Suzanne Scanlan.  Ms. Scanlan is a lecturer in the Department of History of Art and Visual Culture at Rhode Island School of Design.

About “Old Masters, New World: America’s Raid on Europe’s Great Pictures” In the Gilded Age, newly wealthy and culturally ambitious Americans began to compete for Europe’s extraordinary Old Master pictures, causing a major migration of art across the Atlantic. “Old Masters, New World” is a backstage look at the cutthroat competition, financial maneuvering, intrigue, and double-dealing often involved in these purchases, not to mention the seductive power of the ravishing paintings that drove these collectors-including financier J. Pierpont Morgan, sugar king H. O. Havemeyer, Boston aesthete Isabella Stewart Gardner, and industrialist Henry Clay Frick.

Guest Speaker Suzanne Scanlan Suzanne Scanlan’s research centers on women as artists, patrons and collectors from the Renaissance through the modern period. In 2010, Ms. Scanlan joined the faculty at RISD where she teaches courses on the art, architecture and material culture of early modern Europe.  She holds a BA from Stonehill College and both a MA and PhD from Brown University.

Reservations for the Art Lovers Book Club are not required, but are appreciated.  Please call 508-222-2644 x10 or email office@attleboroartsmuseum.org by January 18th.  Guests are not required to have read “Old Masters, New World” to attend.  Many participants first attend the Museum’s book club meetings and then read the selected text.
