LTE: MAYOR JORGE O. ELORZA

URBAN TRAIL

Dear Neighbors,

Last week, over a hundred supporters descended on WaterFire Arts Center to celebrate Providence’s Great Streets Initiative and Urban Trail Network Master Plan. The diverse faces that filled audience—City

Council members, community partners, advocates, organizers—all gathered to support the plan’s bold vision for safe, equitable and sustainable streets in Providence. The way they arrived was equally as diverse. Some biked, others walked, and even a few scooted their way down to Valley Street. Thriving cities, we’ve learned, are cities that offer their residents choices.

From here in our Creative Capital, to New OrleansAustin and Denver, cities around the world are rethinking how they rebuild their public spaces. Over the next few years, Great Streets will guide the day-to-day work of our City’s Departments to ensure the investments we make in our public spaces add value to all residents and make Providence a better-connected city. From streetscape and placemaking projects to the creation of a “spine” network of Urban Trails that connect every Providence neighborhood, Great Streets lays out a bold vision for the future of Providence’s largest public asset, its streets.

The road to unveiling the Great Streets plan began over a year ago with a robust community engagement process. As we spoke with residents, we consistently heard that they crave the freedom to safely live, work, and travel throughout our city, no matter how they chose to get around. That mantra was instrumental during the formation of the plan and will remain at the forefront of our efforts as Great Streets improvements come to life across the city.
