MOTOR VEHICLE TAX BILLS BY LAST WEEK OF JANUARY

Motor Vehicle Taxes Can be Expected the Last Week of January

PAWTUCKET – The City of Pawtucket has announced that residents should expect to receive their motor vehicle tax bills for Fiscal Year 2021 beginning Tuesday, January 26th.

With the State’s budget passing in mid-December 2020 due to a pandemic-related delay, the City held off sending out the motor vehicle taxes until after the State’s budget had been finalized and passed in order to avoid any confusion and potentially overcharging taxpayers.

“We understand that this year has been difficult for many of our residents and wanted to make sure that we were not going to overcharge anyone. Now that we have the correct information, residents can expect to receive the tax bills,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien.

In these difficult financial times, the Pawtucket City Council and Administration collaborated on a no-tax-increase budget this past July. In the same collaborative spirit, the City Council and Mayor Grebien agreed to not charge interest penalties to anyone that pays their car tax bills by June 30th.

“We want to work together to assist our residents while balancing the ability to provide the quality of life services that they need and deserve,” said Grebien.

The City announced that the deadlines for each fiscal quarter were to be moved which resulted in the:

Quarter 1 deadline moving from July 15, 2020 to March 1, 2021,

Quarter 2 deadline moving from October 15, 2020 to March 15, 2021,

Quarter 3 deadline moving from January 15, 2021 to May 3, 2020, and

Quarter 4 deadline moving from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021.

According to Rhode Island General Law, taxes not paid by the due date are delinquent and will carry interest charge from July 16, 2020 on the current unpaid balance at the rate of 13% annually. Interest will be assessed on June 30, 2021 for any remaining unpaid balance. Failure to pay in installments will result in full payment due. R.I.G.L. 44-5-8
