Dear neighbor –

In July 2021, the City of Providence launched the Providence Guaranteed Income (PVDGI) pilot program. 110 individuals were randomly selected for the PVDGI pilot program, all of whom are Providence residents with an income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. The selected 110 Providence residents have been receiving monthly $500 payments since November of 2021, which were previously scheduled to end in October of this year.

Earlier this week, I was proud to be joined by two Providence Guaranteed Income (PVDGI) pilot program participants, along with program partners, to announce a six-month extension of the PVDGI Program using American Rescue Plan Act dollars.

For many individuals and families, this income is life-changing, helping some our city’s lowest-income residents to get back on their feet. As we heard from two program participants yesterday, these funds are going towards necessities, like paying for rent, food and clothing for themselves and their families, or for a vehicle to get to and from work. That’s the power of this program; it puts the decision-making ability in the hands of the participants, who know how to best use this additional income for their specific circumstances.

With these additional six months of guaranteed income payments, we’ll be able to collect more data and better understand the impacts of this program – and our participants will be able to continue making strides towards achieving their goals.
