OP -ED: JAMES P. MC GOVERN, MEMBER OF CONGRESS

Hello Neighbors and Friends,

When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, it ripped away a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions. Because of this ruling, American women today have fewer rights than their mothers.

And some Republican lawmakers are even plotting a nationwide ban to criminalize abortion in every state—including here in Massachusetts. I will not stand by and allow this to happen.

While serving you in Congress, I voted to pass three critical pieces of legislation to protect women’s health freedom and more importantly—their lives:

The Women’s Health Protection Act makes the protections of Roe v. Wade the law of the land. All House Republicans voted against this bill.

The Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act stops the criminalization, fining or suing women who travel across state lines to obtain an abortion. 205 House Republicans voted against this bill.

The Right to Contraception Act guarantees the right to obtain and use birth control including oral contraception, emergency contraception and IUDs. 195 House Republicans voted against this bill.

Are you seeing a pattern here? Extreme politicians want to strip away a woman’s right to make her own reproductive health decisions. They want women to have less freedom. I find that unconscionable and unacceptable.

House Democrats are committed to protecting abortion access. We will continue to put People Over Politics by fighting to restore Roe v. Wade.

In solidarity and service,

James P. McGovern

Member of Congress
