In the third installment of Pioneer’s voc-tech school spotlight series, we head to Western Massachusetts to look at two standout examples of what works: Worcester Technical High School and Putnam Vocational Technical High School in Springfield.
Both schools have undergone a real transformation over the years, and it didn’t happen by chance. Putnam’s reforms, which took root in the early 2000s, followed the model Worcester Tech had already begun building: a strong emphasis on academic achievement, strong ties to local occupations, and school leadership committed to making these schools a state model.
Today, both are “schools of choice” in their districts, built on deep, sustained partnerships with local business, labor, and higher education communities. Our latest video walks through how that happens in practice, including:

This spotlight builds on Pioneer’s ongoing research into urban voc-tech education. Our Agenda for Leadership calls for repealing the state’s lottery-based admissions mandate for voc-tech schools and redirecting a portion of Massachusetts’ workforce development funding to create thousands of new voc-tech seats in underserved regions.
