AUBREY AND MAYOR SMILEY

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest recognition attainable by Girl Scout Cadettes in grades six through eight. The award highlights the innovative and impactful projects these young leaders develop to address pressing community needs. Aubrey’s Silver Award project is titled Fairy Trails.

For her Silver Award project, Aubrey created ‘Fairy Trails’, a magical garden and walking path at the Wanskuck Library in Providence that brings nature, imagination, and community together. She turned a once-overlooked outdoor space into a whimsical fairyland where kids and families can explore, play, and connect with the environment. Visitors can check out a trail map at the front desk, then follow the path to discover fairy houses, colorful plants, and spots to add their own creations. It’s all about sparking creativity and helping kids feel proud of their local library!

Aubrey teamed up with URI Master Gardeners to learn which plants would bloom year after year and keep the garden vibrant. She dug and built the Fairy Garden herself, drew the plans for the trail, created a digital map, chose natural materials like logs and acorns for play, and added pops of color to make the space feel alive. The garden is also a tribute to her Nonno, who taught her how to make a fairy garden and always believed in supporting libraries that need a little extra love. ‘Fairy Trails’ is more than a garden, it’s a place where stories grow, art is shared, and magic is real.

Aubrey hosted a grand opening for The People’s Garden of Wanskuck Library in September! Aubrey invited several officials to the grand opening and was excited to see Mayor Brett P. Smiley, Senator Jacob E. Bissaillon, Senator Stefano Famiglietti, and Councilman Justin Roias in attendance. Attendees were able to follow the fairy trail, build their own fairy house, and help make the garden magical! It was an incredible evening for Aubrey and the community.

“‘Fairy Trails’ is inspired by my Nonno, who passed in 2024 and who loved creating fairy gardens. Now I’m sharing that joy with the kids at Wanskuck Library. Nearly 20 children helped launch the project by building fairy houses along the trail I created, and I’m excited to see how the community shapes future themes. Anyone is welcome to contribute ideas at the circulation desk. My advice to other kids hoping to make an impact: really see your community—many spaces just need a little shaping, some elbow grease, and the courage to ask local leaders to get involved.” said Aubrey, Silver Award Girl Scout.
