East Providence, RI ??? ??Bay View Academy and the Rhode Island Blood Center (RIBC) have enjoyed a partnership to benefit the Rhode Island community, wherein RIBC hosts two blood drives per year at the Academy. This year, Bay View students are enjoying an added level of this partnership; RIBC handed down ten of their lab tables for use in Bay View???s science labs. According to Upper School science teacher, Janell Johnson, PhD, each table retails for approximately $1,000. Patti Dalton, a Bay View parent and member of the donor scheduling team at RIBC, arranged for the donation of the gently-used tables after lab renovations at the blood center.

Bay View Upper School students now make use of the tables daily in the Bio-Chemistry Lab. In a recent laboratory experiment, Honors Molecular Biology students investigated how the chemical properties of the macromolecules that compose the cell can be exploited in order to purify them from one another in a cell lysate (see photos).

Bay View’s last blood drive took place on campus in the Athletic Wellness Center. Students, faculty, staff and parents came to roll up their sleeves and donated 36 pints of blood. According to the RIBC, 108 lives could potentially be saved with a collection of this amount because one donation can be made into a treatment of red cells, platelets and plasma to help three different people.

??The Academy will host another blood drive on March 10, 2016. All are welcome to attend.
