- Heat is the leading weather-related cause of death in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year.
- With an outside temperature of 80 degrees, it only takes one hour for the temperature inside a car to reach a deadly 123 degrees.
- A storm is classified as a tropical storm when its sustained winds reach 39 mph; it becomes a hurricane when the sustained winds reach 74 mph.
- Storms with winds above 74 mph are called “hurricanes” in the Atlantic and East Pacific oceans, “typhoons” in the West Pacific Ocean, and “cyclones” in the Indian and South Pacific Oceans.

To get important life-saving information to more people and to answer questions they might have, the AccuWeather Ready program will also present a series of events on Facebook each Wednesday, May 23 through June 27 at 1 p.m. U.S. EDT, each featuring an expert meteorologist from AccuWeather or another skilled professional from external agencies.
